Information for Parents

Grandparent as guardian

Today’s families face a variety of challenges. Because of these challenges, it is not unusual for a relative to step in and take on the role of the "parent” or primary care giver. Commonly, this relative is a grandparent, but can also be an aunt, uncle, cousin, sibling or any family member related by blood, marriage or adoption. Caring and supporting for a young person when they need it most is a cherished gift. However, there is much to know when stepping into this new role.

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has developed a handy resource guide: A Resource Guide for New Hampshire Relative Caregivers. This guide includes a wealth of information including, legal matters, support services, financial services, and education resources. To view the entire guide, please download the PDF, Grandparents as Parents.
